Description

BBA PurePond Algae Blaster — Natural Bacteria Treatment for String Algae & Blanket Weed

If your pond is dealing with string algae or blanket weed — the green strands that cling to rocks, pumps, pond walls and liner — BBA PurePond Algae Blaster is designed specifically for that problem. It's a 20x concentrated liquid bacteria formula that works by depleting the nutrients string algae depends on to grow, rather than killing it with chemicals.

The bacteria are fast-growing, locally selected strains that are also facultative anaerobes — meaning they work in low-oxygen conditions like sludge build-up and filter media as well as open water. This matters for string algae because it often anchors itself in exactly the spots where oxygenation is lowest and chemical treatments are least effective.

Results are visible within 3 to 10 days under favourable conditions. As the bacterial colony establishes and nutrient levels drop, algae starves off and water clarity improves. The bacterial population also breaks down sludge, uneaten fish food and excess organic matter at the same time — so the pond benefits beyond just the algae problem.

Ready to apply liquid — no mixing, no activation, no pre-treatment required. Australian made and owned, by BBA Biosolution in Sydney, NSW.

Key benefits

  • Visible string algae and blanket weed reduction in 3 to 10 days
  • Natural bacterial mechanism — no chemicals, no copper, no risk of oxygen crash from mass algae die-off
  • 20x concentrated formula — small volume, large treatment capacity
  • Facultative anaerobe strain — works in low-oxygen zones including sludge and filter media
  • Breaks down sludge, uneaten feed, ammonia, nitrites, phosphorus and organic odours simultaneously
  • Works in all water temperatures — best performance when water is above 10°C
  • Safe for fish, plants and biological filters at all recommended doses
  • Compatible with auto-dosing systems
  • Ready-to-apply liquid — no mixing or activation needed
  • Australian made and owned

Important: turn off UV and ozone before dosing

This is the most commonly missed step and it's not on any other reseller's listing — so read this before you dose.

BBA Algae Blaster contains live bacteria. UV clarifiers and ozone units kill free-floating bacteria before they can colonise your pond surfaces, filter media and rocks. Before adding Algae Blaster, turn off your UV clarifier and any ozone unit. Leave your pump running so water keeps circulating. After 24 to 48 hours the bacteria will have attached to surfaces where UV can no longer reach them — at that point you can safely turn the UV back on.

Do not add alongside chemical treatments during the dosing period.

Dosage guide

Pond sizeStandard doseInitial application / heavily polluted
250L 10ml 20–30ml
500L 20ml 40–60ml
1,000L 40ml 80–120ml
2,500L 100ml 200–300ml
5,000L 200ml 400–600ml
10,000L 400ml 800ml–1.2L
25,000L 1L 2–3L

Apply evenly over the pond surface or pour directly onto visible algae or blanket weed. For new ponds, or ponds with heavy existing algae, use double or triple the standard dose for the first application, then drop to the standard maintenance rate.

Temperature note

For best performance, apply when water temperature is above 10°C. Bacterial activity slows significantly in cold water — if treating in winter, results may take longer than the 3 to 10 day typical window.

Safety

Avoid eye contact — rinse immediately with water if exposed. Not for human consumption. Keep out of reach of children. Deviating from recommended dosing rates or treating in unstable water conditions can harm aquatic life. Follow label instructions.

Frequently asked questions

What algae does BBA Algae Blaster treat?
It is formulated specifically for filamentous algae — commonly called string algae or blanket weed. This is the green, thread-like algae that attaches to pond rocks, liner, pumps and waterfalls. It is not designed as a primary treatment for green water (suspended algae), which is better addressed with a UV clarifier.

How quickly will I see results?
Visible improvement typically occurs within 3 to 10 days under favourable conditions. Water temperature above 10°C gives the best results. Heavily algae-affected ponds may need a double or triple initial dose before dropping to the regular maintenance rate.

Do I need to turn off my UV filter before dosing?
Yes — this step is critical and often missed. Turn off your UV clarifier and any ozone unit before adding Algae Blaster. Leave your pump running so water circulates. After 24 to 48 hours the bacteria have attached to surfaces where UV cannot reach them and it is safe to turn the UV back on.

Is it safe for fish and plants?
Yes, including at higher doses, when used according to label directions. It is safe for fish, pond plants and biological filters.

How is this different from a chemical algaecide like copper sulfate?
Chemical algaecides kill algae directly, which can cause a rapid oxygen drop as the dead algae decomposes — a risk in warm weather with heavy algae loads. BBA Algae Blaster uses bacteria that deplete the nutrients algae needs to grow, so algae declines more gradually. There is no sudden oxygen demand spike and no chemical residue.

Can I use it with an auto-dosing system?
Yes, it is compatible with auto-dosing setups.

What water temperature does it need?
It works in all water temperatures but performs best above 10°C. In colder water, bacterial activity slows and results may take longer to appear.

Is it made in Australia?
Yes — BBA Biosolution is based in Sydney, NSW. The product is Australian made and owned.
