Description

BBA PurePond Pond Maintenance - Beneficial Bacteria Liquid — 20x Concentrated Pond Water Treatment

Most pond bacteria products sold in Australia are dilute formulations that need large volumes to make a meaningful difference. BBA PurePond Beneficial Bacteria Liquid is 20x more concentrated than most comparable products — 10mL treats 1,000L at first-time dosing, and the ongoing maintenance rate drops to just 5mL per 1,000L fortnightly.

What makes it genuinely different from other high-concentration bacteria products is the strain composition. PurePond Beneficial Bacteria contains both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial strains in one formula. Aerobic bacteria thrive in well-oxygenated water and are most active in the water column and filter media. Anaerobic bacteria work in the low-oxygen zones — pond substrate, sludge layers, deep filter chambers — where aerobic strains can't function. Most pond bacteria products are one or the other. This one covers both simultaneously, which means it works across the whole pond environment rather than just the oxygenated portion.

The practical result: significant improvement in water clarity typically within 3 to 7 days, alongside ongoing reduction in ammonia, nitrites, phosphorus and organic sludge. Safe for fish, plants and all aquatic life at all recommended doses. Australian made and owned, by BBA Biosolution in Sydney, NSW.

What it does and how

The bacteria establish colonies across your pond — in the water column, on filter media, in substrate and in sludge layers — and begin breaking down the organic compounds driving your water quality problems. Specifically:

The aerobic strains convert toxic ammonia (NH₃) and nitrites (NO₂) into less harmful nitrates through the standard nitrification cycle. They also compete with algae for nutrients, reducing the food supply that would otherwise drive algae and blanket weed growth.

The anaerobic strains get to work where your filtration can't reach — decomposing organic matter in sludge through biofloc formation, reducing the black, odour-producing anaerobic sediment that builds up at the base of the pond over time.

Used on a fortnightly maintenance schedule, the combined action keeps your pond's biological cycle stable and self-sustaining rather than requiring reactive chemical intervention when things go wrong.

Dosage guide

Pond sizeFirst-time useHeavily polluted (double/triple)Fortnightly maintenance
500L 5mL 10–15mL 2.5mL
1,000L 10mL 20–30mL 5mL
2,500L 25mL 50–75mL 12.5mL
5,000L 50mL 100–150mL 25mL
10,000L 100mL 200–300mL 50mL
20,000L 200mL 400–600mL 100mL
50,000L 500mL 1–1.5L 250mL
100,000L 1L 2–3L 500mL

Dose rates are guidelines. Individual conditions — water pollution level, pond depth, algae density, water temperature and suspended material volume — all affect how much you need. More accurate dose rates can be established by testing your specific pond.

Which size do I need?

SizeBest suited to
100mL Trial/starter — treats up to 10,000L first dose
250mL Small ponds up to 5,000L with several months of maintenance
500mL Medium ponds 5,000–10,000L with ongoing maintenance supply
1L Large ponds 10,000–25,000L or professional pond servicing
5L Commercial use, multiple ponds, or professional pond maintenance businesses

Important: turn off UV and ozone before dosing

Turn off your UV clarifier, ozone unit and any active chemical treatment before adding PurePond Beneficial Bacteria. Leave your pump running so water circulates. After 24 to 48 hours the bacteria will have colonised filter media, pond liner and substrate surfaces where UV cannot reach them — at that point turn the UV back on safely.

Running UV while dosing kills free-floating bacteria before they can establish. This is the most common reason people report reduced effectiveness from beneficial bacteria products.

Storage

Store sealed, out of direct sunlight, between 5°C and 45°C. Do not freeze — freezing damages live bacterial strains and reduces effectiveness.

Frequently asked questions

What makes BBA PurePond different from other pond bacteria products?
Two main things. First, it contains both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial strains — most products are one or the other. This means it works across the full pond environment including low-oxygen sludge and substrate zones, not just oxygenated water. Second, it is 20x more concentrated than most comparable products, so effective doses are much smaller volumes.

How quickly will I see results?
Significant water clarity improvement typically occurs within 3 to 7 days under favourable conditions. Initial treatment of heavily polluted ponds may need double or triple the standard dose and can take longer.

How often do I need to dose?
For ongoing maintenance after the initial treatment, add 5mL per 1,000L fortnightly. This keeps the bacterial colony active and the pond's biological cycle stable without requiring reactive treatment when things go wrong.

Do I need to turn off my UV clarifier?
Yes. Turn off your UV clarifier, ozone unit and any chemical treatments before dosing. Leave the pump running. After 24 to 48 hours the bacteria have established on surfaces where UV cannot reach them and it is safe to turn it back on.

Can I use it in a new pond?
Yes — in fact it is strongly recommended for new pond set-ups to establish the biological filtration cycle before fish are introduced, or at the same time as introducing fish to manage the ammonia spike from the start.

What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and why does having both matter?
Aerobic bacteria need oxygen to function — they work best in oxygenated water and filter media. Anaerobic bacteria work without oxygen — in pond substrate, sludge layers and deep filter zones. Most ponds have both oxygenated and low-oxygen areas. A product with only aerobic strains leaves the anaerobic zones untreated. PurePond covers both simultaneously.

Is it safe for koi, goldfish and pond plants?
Yes, at all recommended doses. It is safe for fish, plants, shrimp and all aquatic life.

Does it need refrigeration?
No. Store between 5°C and 45°C, sealed and out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze.

Is it made in Australia?
Yes. BBA Biosolution is based in Sydney, NSW. The product is Australian made and owned.
