Why Use a Water Treatment?

Here's what the right treatment can do for your pond:

• Control algae — green water, string algae, and blanket weed on rocks and pumps

Why Isn't My Filter Enough on Its Own?

This is one of the most common questions we get. It's a fair one — if you've got a good filter, why do you need anything else?

Your filter only catches what it can see. The foam and brushes trap leaves, dirt and debris. But things dissolved in the water — like tannins from leaves, or ammonia from fish waste — pass straight through. A filter simply isn't built to deal with those.

Biological filters need time and warmth to work. Inside your filter, helpful bacteria break down fish waste into safer substances. But:

• A new filter can take several weeks to build up enough bacteria to do this well
• Most bacteria slow right down — or stop altogether — once the water gets cold, usually below about 10°C
• Even a well-established filter doesn't touch sludge already sitting on the pond floor, or algae already in the water

This is where water treatments come in. They add extra bacteria straight into the water, correct problems your filter can't reach, and keep things working through the cooler months when natural bacteria can't keep up. Think of them as backup — not a replacement for your filter, but the extra support it needs.

For everyday maintenance
