Water Wall Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions our water wall customers ask most.

Planning & Sizing

What size spillway do I need?

As a starting point, match your spillway width to roughly one third of the wall width you're working with. We stock 300mm, 600mm, 900mm, 1200mm and 1500mm widths — or use the Water Wall Kit Builder to have it matched automatically.

What pump flow rate do I need?

It depends on the effect: a wall wash effect needs roughly 50–60 L/min per metre of spillway width, while a projecting curtain effect needs significantly more, around 230 L/min per metre. Always choose a pump with a flow rate controller so you can fine-tune it after installation.

How much does a water wall cost?

Core components (spillway, pump and trough) typically start from around $300–$500 for a small setup, $800–$1,500 for a mid-range setup with LED lighting, and $2,000+ for a premium multi-spillway build in marine grade stainless. These figures cover components only — cladding, installation and freight are additional.

Materials & Effects

Should I choose stainless steel or acrylic?

Stainless gives a thicker, more robust curtain close to the wall with the lowest long-term maintenance. Acrylic gives a thinner, more delicate projecting sheet and is a strong choice for shaded or south-facing walls. See our full Stainless vs Acrylic comparison.

What's the difference between 316 and 304 grade stainless?

316 marine grade contains added molybdenum for superior resistance to chloride exposure, making it essential for pools and coastal properties. 304 is more affordable and performs well for indoor features or well-maintained inland fresh water installs. See our 316 vs 304 guide.

Which effect suits my space — wall wash or projecting curtain?

A wall wash effect is quieter and gentler, suited to indoor features and courtyards. A projecting curtain effect has stronger visual and audio impact, suited to pools and entertaining areas. Read our full comparison.

Pool Installations

Can I use acrylic near a swimming pool?

Yes — acrylic is rated for chlorinated and salt water and is a genuinely popular pool choice, not just a budget option. It's best suited to a shaded or south-facing wall, where UV exposure is minimal. See our full pool water wall guide.

Can I run my water wall off my existing pool pump?

Often, yes — by plumbing the spillway into your pool circulation as an auxiliary return line with a diverter valve. This works best with a variable speed pool pump that has spare capacity. Any plumbing modifications should be assessed by a licensed pool technician.

Will my stainless spillway stain near a pool?

Even 316 marine grade can develop light cosmetic "tea staining" over time, particularly in salt-chlorinated pools. This doesn't affect strength or lifespan — balanced pool chemistry and an occasional rinse keeps it looking bright.

Installation & Maintenance

Can I install a water wall myself with no experience?

Yes — our kits are designed for homeowners with basic DIY skills. The main steps are mounting the spillway, installing the trough and connecting the pump with hose and fittings. See our full how-to guide, or call us for guidance.

How do I maintain my water wall?

Wipe the spillway lip monthly, check the pump filter every 2–3 months, top up trough water in summer, and use an algae treatment as needed. Shop our Care & Maintenance range.
